Yes, I do realize that it has been almost a month since my last post, but it has been for good reason. I have been studying my face off for finals, and now I am done for this semester! So guess what...it’s BLOG TIME!!!
To start out I need to congratulate the winner of the give-away from my last post. If you don’t remember, as it was so long ago, I hosted a give-away for a $35 online gift card for any of CSN’s online stores! So cool! Anyway on to the big announcement…our winner was…drum roll please…SILAS (siguy)! Yeah! Such a great Christmas surprise! I hope you enjoyed your gift card Si, and Merry Christmas!
Now, if you noticed, the photo for this blog post is an adorable little gingerbread house. Let that photo, and this blog post be PROOF that I do cook. Let me explain to you how my little creations came to be. The other day I was reading a few of my favorite blogs (I’m a blog stalker...it’s just a fact of life), and I came across the adorable little gingerbread house recipe from www.notmartha.org. I immediately fell in love and decided to be awesome and make them! I worked hard to make it all perfect, and to make them all by myself, without help…well, that didn’t quite end up happening. As soon as the mixer started smoking and sparking at me, I recruited help from the real cook of the family, my lovely sister Cari. We proceeded to set the mixer outside to cool down, and then Cari fixed my dough for me. After her fantastic rescue, and a good arm workout, I finally completed my little gingerbread homes. As you look at the picture for this blog, you can see that my homes are obviously not perfect…and they may never be perfect, but that is ok. I don’t need to have Martha Stewart perfect gingerbread homes, and I don’t need to have a Martha Stewart perfect Christmas.
How often do you look at the beautiful pictures in magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, or Elle and wish that your home, your face, your life was as perfect as each photo. I know for a fact that I have. I have strived to make everything “perfect,” to work at something until I have made it become “perfect.” Often Christmas is one of the most tempting times to get caught in this cycle. We work so hard at making Christmas perfect for everyone, and making sure everything gets done, soon we forget the purpose.
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving.
Luke 10:38-40 (ESV)
Martha was distracted. Now look at what she was doing…was she sinning? No, she was serving, she was making all the preparations for dinner, and cooking, and making it perfect, and…missing time with her Lord.
And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
Luke 10:41-42 (ESV)
The good portion. That has become such an amazing quote to me. God is our good portion. He is our only portion. He is our portion when we struggle through college finals, when we face the Christmas hubbub, as we go through mundane daily tasks, and through the struggle of battling imperfection. Our God is our life and our portion through it all, He is calling us to Him each moment of every day. When we strive to match the world’s view of perfection He is whispering, “Come home. Choose me. I am the good portion.”
So back to my gingerbread homes (I like calling them homes…it’s rather cute), they are far from perfect, but that is ok. They will most likely never be perfect, just like my house, and my face, and my life will never look like the lives that are featured in Martha Stewart magazine, and Elle, and Better Homes and Gardens etc. I am the clay and God is the potter, He will mold me into what He wants me to be. I don’t need to have the perfect life through the world’s eyes, I only need to choose Him.
I also want to share this quick comment Bethany Dillon shared about this passage in an interview with Andy Argyrakis featured on www.thefish.com.
“I've always been challenged by the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10. I so relate to Martha's personality! She got worked up to the point of asking Jesus, "Don't you care that I'm working and my sister is just sitting there with you?" The way he responded to her is stunning: "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion and it will not be taken away from her."
I'm learning that being busy isn't a bad thing, it's just when it becomes the most necessary thing to me. I so easily forget that Jesus is my source, and he creates order and purpose out of chaos. Knowing him well is so much more precious than any to-do list.”

Last of all I am providing a download of my song, “Empty” that is based on this lesson God has been speaking to my heart. I have never posted a song before, and rarely share my songs, so bare with me. My song writing techniques are not professional, I am just me, but I hope the words will help to bring this message to your heart.
